Some robots connect to smart assistants such as Alexa and Google Assistant for a hands-free experience. Look for models that can be recharged and continue cleaning the area they left.
1. iRobot S8
This smart robot vacuum and mop combo is an excellent option for a wide range of homes. It is able to vacuum and mop well, has excellent navigation with both GPS and laser sensors and offers a broad range of features and controls that are accessible via the app. It also has a handy feature that allows you to add cleaning zones to certain areas that require more attention and Keep Out zones where you don't want it to be. As with all Roomba devices, it gets new software updates that make it even more efficient over time.
It's costly, but it's is also among the most advanced robot vacuums ZDNet has ever tested. It comes with a powerful battery that can clean an entire home in less than two hours. It also switches between mopping and vacuuming with the push of the button. And unlike other self-emptying robotics that require you to empty the bin after each run, it automatically empties into the larger waste container that is above its charging dock.
It also has a number of other features, such as intelligent obstacle avoidance which uses a camera along with processor-powered smarts in order to detect obstacles. It's rarely tripped up or stuck during a cleaning cycle. In my tests it was the most effective at avoiding objects like power cables. However, it's not as accurate in detecting pet waste and other dangers.
2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8
While Anker-owned Eufy has made its name in budget robot vacuums, it hasn't previously offered an all-in-one model that could also mop. The X8 Hybrid is a new model that comes with a variety of features that are advanced and can compete with much more expensive models.
Eufy's main selling point with the X8 is its laser navigation. The X8 utilizes laser mapping technology that is more precise than previous Eufy devices. It takes less time to build an accurate map of your home. It also has the ability to store multiple maps. This is perfect for homes with multiple floors.
The X8 is a good vacuum cleaner for floors that are clean. It can easily sling debris under the side brushes and into the 400ml dustbin. The tyres are adept at securing corners and edges even though they're circular. It's not the best cat litter eater, however as our tests show it can only remove about 90 percent of the fur off hard floors.
There's a basic mopping option which uses the same water tank as the vacuuming one. While this is great for spills that are not too large, you can't control how much water it uses and this will reduce its effectiveness for more serious stains. However, it does an admirable job of picking up pet hair, and has a higher speed of pickup than the Roborock S7.
3. Miele RX2
Known for quietly effective home appliances Miele's RX2 robot vacuum comes with outstanding cleaning power, beautiful design, and a great navigation. But it has a few operational oddities that prevent it from being ranked as the best overall smart robot vacuum.
The RX2 comes with a dual-sensor mapping technique which uses LIDAR to map a room as well as a pair of 3D scanning cameras for detecting and eliminating obstacles (such as furniture legs or pet waste). Once the room is defined it is possible to designate virtual no-go areas and preferred sections to the robot. You can also alter the cleaning options, begin cleaning manually or see live feeds of the onboard cameras from the main screen.
The RX2 is equipped with excellent sensors that detect furniture and other obstructions instantly. The suction and sweeping capabilities are exceptional, removing surface litter from carpets with medium pile and also removing dust that has been deposited on floors. It's not the fastest robotics on the market. Like many other robots it's not a great climber and has issues with things like thresholds made of steel transition strips.
A lot of people purchase a robotic vacuum for the hands-off convenience of setting a schedule in an app and then forgetting about it for weeks at an time. It's crucial that a robot is able to do the job and that's the reason our ZDNet staff looked over and tested a number of the most popular ones to help you find the perfect one for your home.
4. Shark ION
This budget robovac that looks like any other, but comes with some extra features and a better performance. Its smart mapping system creates 3D and 2D maps of your home and uses them to navigate around obstacles and avoid them. It's also able to detect common obstacles such as furniture legs and power cords in real time. This combination of sensors along with a bump sensor, and an infrared drop sensor which keeps it from falling down the stairs, makes it one of the fastest vacs we've tested.
It was able to climb over thick shag carpets and was not stuck (unlike the RoboVac 11s, or Roomba 690-). Its navigation abilities were also impressive; its composite score in carpet and bare floors topped the competition. It picked up 98.5 percent of the surface pet hair and litter from our lab test samples.
The controls are more basic than the competitors. There's an uniform cleaning button on the top. You can start it from the app or by voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also schedule daily or weekly cleanings, create no-go zones, and look up its cleaning history. Clad in smart dark gray plastics, Ion feels sturdy and is attractive in your home. Its rear dustbin is accessible for emptying, and taking out the filters is also easy.
5. Eufy 11S
Eufy 11S is a good choice if you want an automated vacuum cleaner that is simple and doesn't have any frills at a cost that is low. It lacks some of the smart features, like digital mapping and Alexa integration, found in higher-end models, but if you don't need those functions you can save some money with this model.
This robot is very easy to set up and use. It does not require a smartphone application or Wi-Fi pairing. However, it does come with a remote control which lets you choose between different modes and adjust suction levels. It also allows you to manually take the robovac off during scheduled cleaning.
During our tests, we discovered that the 11S was extremely effective at cleaning dirt and pet fur from hard floors and low-pile carpets. Its slim profile made it possible to fit under furniture with low hanging and other items that larger robots are unable to reach. It was able to get easily over thresholds of doorways and transition from one type of floor to another.
Like other robots, the 11S can suck up some objects like cords, drawstrings on hoodies and cat toys. The manufacturer states that you can stop this by keeping these items off the floor and by using a cord organizer if possible. It also suggests that you periodically clean the dustbin, change the filters, and clean or change the brushes when necessary.
iRobot Roomba 990
The Roomba is iRobot’s flagship robot vacuum. It's pricey, but it's top-performing and is arguably the most sophisticated robot vacuum you can purchase. Its self navigation and environmental mapping are truly a marvel to behold. It also has more advanced automation features than most competitors, including the ability to set virtual boundary markers with its mobile app. While its app isn't the most responsive and the 980 may spin a bit when crossing cables, it's a highly efficient robot vacuum.
One thing we really like about the 980 is the fact that it utilizes its iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors and its visual simultaneous mapping and localisation technology (or vSLAM) to memorise the floor plan of your home. It uses this information to create a consistent and efficient cleaning path for each cycle. The result is cleaner floors, and a more efficient vacuum than the majority of high-end robot vacuums.
The 980's other features include dual multi-surface rubber brushes, robot vacuum cleaner black friday that pick up dirt from hard floors and carpet and an ejector brush that moves debris into the robotic vacuum's bin. Its floor tracking sensors aid it navigate around furniture and along edges, while Cliff Detect helps to prevent the Roomba from slipping down stairs. It also automatically returns to its base station for easy recharges between sessions. Although the 980's battery lifespan and bin size aren't as impressive as some other robot vacuums, it's a sturdy and reliable machine that can keep your floors spotless for hours at a time.
